NEWS TO USE — Project Salt Box part of nationwide effort to track, protest potential ICE detention centers nationwide

Project Salt Box, a Maryland website initially launched to track down the use of government contracts to purchase or lease immigration detention centers in the state, is part of a nationwide effort to expose Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) expansion nationwide, including the recent purchase of a warehouse in Surprise, AZ. The website features a nationwide map of ICE Warehouse purchases. Opponents are fighting back by reviewing and reporting on government warehouse purchasing contracts, protesting developers/building owners renting or selling their facilities, protesting at city and county meetings to pressure officials to cancel ICE purchases. Flagstaff joins nationwide anti-ICE protest event on Jan. 31

FLAGSTAFF — Protesters marched down Humphrey Street (video) to the Flagstaff City Hall on Saturday, Jan. 31, 2026 to celebrate the ongoing removal of the City's Flock surveillance cameras and to protest against ICE enforcement actions in Minneapolis, Minn. and other cities across the nation. Nearly 200 protesters ended up waving signs, (video) shouting slogans and cheering at honking motorists (video) as part of the event. Protests against Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) intensified during the past few weeks following the shooting deaths of ICE watchers Renee Nicole Good on Jan. 7 and Alex Pretti on Jan. 24. The protest and related actions also added a few extra elements as dozens of local bicycle riders (video) rode through downtown Flagstaff (video) as part of the nationwide "Pedal for Pretti" memorial rides. Rides were held on Jan. 31 in Iowa City,  Milwaukee,  Portland, Ore., San Francisco and elsewhere.

FLAGSTAFF — A national shutdown is planned for Friday, Jan. 30 as part of the growing opposition to the ICE crackdown operation in Minneapolis, Minn. Under the banner of"No Work, No School. No Shopping. Stop Funding Ice," organizers hope the action will convince the Trump administration to end their operation in Minneapolis. "The people of the Twin Cities have shown the way for the whole country – to stop ICE’s reign of terror, we need to SHUT IT DOWN," the organization reported on its website. Protests against Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) intensified during the past few weeks following the shooting deaths of ICE watchers Renee Nicole Good on Jan. 7 and Alex Pretti on Jan. 24. Another protest against ICE and surveillance cameras is scheduled for 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 31 near Flagstaff City Hall. In Flagstaff, ICE opponents previously gathered in front of the Flagstaff City Hall on Jan. 10 and 23 to wave signs and express their opposition to the Minnesota ICE operation.

FLAGSTAFF — A protest march against continued use of Flock license plate-reading cameras and the ongoing ICE crackdown nationwide will be held on Jan. 31, 2026. Organizers said the cameras could be used by ICE as part of its efforts to curtail protests. The march is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m. at Humphrey Street and Cherry Avenue and continue to the Flagstaff City Hall. In a Facebook post on IndivisibleNAZ, "City Hall has not removed the Flock Cameras from the city after voting unanimously to do so. With ICE ramping up its actions in Arizona, and a man getting shot, these Camera’s will be a liability.

Hundreds turn out in frigid weather to protest ICE at Flagstaff City Hall

More than 350 local residents and visitors protested on the street in front of the Flagstaff City Hall against recent Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) actions on Jan. 10, 2026. The protest was part of a national day of action against ICE following the shooting death of  on Jan. 7 of Renee Nicole Good in Minneapolis, Minn. A number of videos show a confusing scene when protesters blocked ICE vehicles on a city street, not far from the murder George Floyd by police officers. Good was shot when she attempted to drive around other vehicles after an ICE agent walked in front of her vehicle. More than 1,000 protests were held in Boston, El Paso, Las Angeles, Minneapolis, New York and other cities nationwide.
