Guest commentary — Indivisible updates + actions: the Black Friday blackout (Nov. 27 through Dec. 1), a message to Trump’s corporate collaborators, more…

The short version is this: Successful anti-authoritarian movements use their economic power to stop the slide into fascism. That’s why Indivisible is enthusiastically joining We Ain’t Buying It: a corporate pressure campaign targeting Home Depot, Target, and Amazon this Black Friday weekend. The longer version is this: Show me what autocracy looks like! What we’re experiencing in America now is strikingly similar to what other democracies that have collapsed into authoritarianism have experienced.

Kings Day protest in June, northern Arizona residents and visitors loudly shared their emotions about the state of the nation’s Democracy during the “No Kings Day of Action” rally on Oct. 18 in front of Flagstaff City Hall. Organized locally by Indivisible Northern Arizona and supported by a variety of local groups, opponents of the Trump administration crowded the sidewalks from Wheeler Park and Humphreys Street along Route 66 around the curve to Milton Road, filling the grassy area up to the Flagstaff City Hall sign. Unlike previous rallies, a sizable crowd of protesters also held up their signs on the opposite side of Humphreys and on Route 66. While detractors said the anti-Trump rallies were made up of aging hippies, radical leftest and those who hate America, it appeared protesters came from all walks of life, from the very young to parents and seniors, many waving American flags.

Organized locally by Indivisible Northern AZ, the event was part of a nationwide protest against “the billionaire agenda is dismantling our government: overseeing mass firings, gutting worker protections and social services, and transferring wealth to the 1% while funding a private army of ICE agents,” the organization stated in a media release.
