Announcing the LULAC Legal Defense Fund – A New Chapter in Latino Civil Rights

Dear Friends,

(On May 16), we proudly announce the launch of the LULAC Legal Defense Fund, a new beacon of hope in the fight for Latino civil rights. For 96 years, LULAC has led the charge for our community – from classrooms to courtrooms – and this historic initiative marks the dawn of an exciting new era.

The LULAC Legal Defense Fund is our answer to the urgent challenges of today, a bold step that builds on nearly a century of activism and legal victories. With new threats to Latino civil rights emerging, we are doubling down on LULAC’s founding mission: to protect the rights of Latinofamilies across the nation.

For nearly a century, LULAC’s landmark litigation has opened doors of opportunity and justice for Latinos. Mendez v. Westminster (1947) – LULAC instigated and funded this case to end the segregation of Mexican-American children in California schools. Hernandez v. Texas (1954) – LULAC attorneys took this fight all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court, securing the right for Latinos to serve on juries and ensuring equal justice under law. LULAC v. Clements (1987) – LULAC challenged the unequal funding of Texas public universities that left Latino students in the border region behind. LULAC v. Perry (2003) – LULAC stood up against gerrymandered voting maps in Texas that diluted Latino political power.

These victories didn’t just happen – we won them together. They prove that when our community unites and refuses to be silenced, justice prevails.

Yet for all these accomplishments, the fight for Latino civil rights is far from over. Each generation faces new attempts to roll back our hard-won progress. In just the past year, LULAC led the charge to stop an unconstitutional executive order that sought to end birthright citizenship for children of immigrant parents. We were the first to file a lawsuit and, after three federal court rulings in our favor, we blocked that unlawful attack on the 14th Amendment. Becoming a U.S. citizen by birth is a sacred right, not a privilege any president can revoke with the stroke of a pen.

And when another executive action tried to disenfranchise Latino voters by forcing millions to provide burdensome proof-of-citizenship documents just to register to vote, LULAC fought back in court and won a sweeping injunction. This crucial victory struck down an anti-voter order that threatened the voting rights of Latino, Black, Indigenous, student, and military voters nationwide. We know that voting is a right – not a privilege reserved for a select few. These recent wins prove that LULAC remains on the front lines, defending our community against any threat to our constitutional rights. But we also know that each victory is only temporary unless we stay vigilant and prepare for the next battle.

That’s why we are launching the LULAC Legal Defense Fund – to expand our fight into new arenas and tackle the evolving injustices our community faces. With your support, this fund will enable bold new litigation and advocacy in critical areas such as education, housing, healthcare, immigration, technology and AI, veterans affaris, and civil and human rights.

From our local neighborhoods to the national stage, the LULAC Legal Defense Fund will empower us to take on cases that strike at the heart of inequality. We will be able to respond faster, fight smarter, and push for lasting change on multiple fronts.None of these bold efforts – not the expanded litigation, nor the Legal Fellows Program – will be possible without your support. LULAC has always been a community-powered movement, and today we’re calling on our grassroots familia to rise to the occasion.

Click here to donate $25, $50, $75, or more and stand with LULAC in this urgent fight for justice. Your contribution – no matter the size – is an investment in the future of our community. It fuels the lawyers who will stand in court on behalf of a Latino veteran denied benefits, a young student facing discrimination, or a family threatened with separation. It sends a message that we will never back down or let our rights be stripped away.

This is a pivotal moment. By giving today, you become an essential part of a legacy that began 96 years ago and a future that will extend for generations. Together, we will ensure that the arc of justice bends toward Latino communities and that our children inherit a country that honors its promise of equality for all. We’ve proved time and again that when we unite in purpose and passion, we can change the world.

Thank you for your support and commitment. Thank you for standing with LULAC in this historic launch — and for continuing the fight for a more just and inclusive America.Sincerely,

Roman Palomares
