FLAGSTAFF — Culture Connection AZ invites the community to Disappeared: Portraits of Absence, Songs of Resistance, an evening of powerful music and art dedicated to honoring the victims of forced disappearance and the global movements seeking justice. This interdisciplinary event will take place during the First Friday ArtWalk on April 4th at the Historic Ice House on Birch Ave and will feature an exhibition, live performances, and a space for community reflection and solidarity.
Through music, photography, poetry, and historical storytelling, Disappeared will illuminate the human cost of these crimes while celebrating the resilience of those who refuse to let these stories be forgotten.
The highlight of the exhibition is the compelling photographic work of Daniel GM, which captures the devastating impact of forced disappearances in Mexico – a crisis that disproportionately affects women and marginalized communities. Featuring members of the Collective Family of the Disappeared Orizaba-Cordoba, these images offer a deeply personal look at loss, resilience, and activism. Curated by Northern Arizona University students under the guidance of Dr. Pedro Gonzalez Corona and Dr. Björn Krondorfer of the Martin-Springer Institute, the exhibition contextualizes the crisis and highlights the women-led movements that continue to demand accountability.
Complementing the exhibit, the evening will feature live music on the patio, showcasing some of Flagstaff’s most beloved musicians, including MattyZ, The Pocket Limes, Antara and Robbie, Bob Neustadt, LOON, and Wild World Irish Fiddle, among others. These artists will perform internationally recognized songs of resistance and protest, as well as original compositions dedicated to raising awareness and strengthening community bonds. Music has long been a catalyst for social change, and this event will harness its power to inspire action and honor the memories of those who have disappeared.
Attendance is free, with a suggested $10 donation to support Culture Connection AZ’s mission of providing cultural programming to the Flagstaff community. Disappeared is more than an event – it is a call to remembrance, a celebration of resilience, and a gathering of solidarity. Don’t miss this meaningful and unforgettable evening.
